A five-man team of surgeons from the United States of America and Germany have successfully performed reconstructive surgeries on 36 patients suffering from Cancrum Oris, an infectious disease that destroys the soft and hard tissues of the oral structures at the Noma Hospital, Sokoto.
The Chief Medical Director of Noma Hospital, Dr Bello Ahmed, disclosed this to journalists who were on a facility tour of the hospital in Sokoto.
According to him, the surgeries were conducted on the patients who were suffering from the disease, as well as bone injuries, accident-related facial, limb and body deformities.
He stated that the surgeries were conducted between January and February, this year, adding that more than 90 per cent of the patients were children, while about 10 per cent were adults.
