FIFA bans Lionel Messi for four games

FIFA suspended Argentina's Lionel Messi (10) four games for this argument with assistant referee Emerson Augusto de Carvalho for “directing insulting words” at him during a World Cup qualifying match against Chile last Thursday in Buenos Aires.

FIFA suspended Lionel Messi for Argentina’s next four qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, dealing a blow to a campaign by the 2014 runner-up that has stuttered without him. FIFA officials banned Messi for “having directed insulting words at an assistant referee’’ during a home qualifier last Tuesday against Chile. Messi’s suspension started on Tuesday, forcing Argentina to play without him in a 2-0 loss to Bolivia in La Paz. The five-time player of the year can appeal to FIFA, but is on track to return for Argentina’s final match in the 10-team South American qualifying group, hosting Ecuador on Oct. 10. ‘‘We have to appeal this decision, we’ll see how it goes,’’ said Jorge Miadosqui, Argentina’s national teams director. ‘‘But we’re left angry and sad because [Messi] will not be with the team.”
